SMSC is a valued part of the curriculum at Griffin to teach students the key social skills, and awareness of others and of the world around them, that they need in order to be happy and successful individuals, both now and in the future. The SMSC theme for the week is introduced at Monday’s Whole School Assembly and students have 2 follow up lessons each week. SMSC is also taught through ICB and Inside Out Fridays. British Values are threaded through our SMSC curriculum.
The PATHS® Programme is part of SMSC at Griffin and is designed to facilitate the development of self-control, emotional awareness and interpersonal problem-solving skills. PATHS is taught during at least 2 SMSC lessons each week and these sessions are then referred to as appropriate during other lessons throughout the week, e.g. when resolving a conflict or catching someone achieving the skill that was taught.
Every class is expected to follow the “Golden Rule” from PATHS “Treat others as you want to be treated.”
Collective Worship (Assemblies)
All children in the school participate in a daily act of collective reflection. Assemblies celebrate the rich and varied heritage of other cultures and faiths as well as the Christian heritage. The presentation of celebrations and seasonal festivals increases knowledge and understanding. Assemblies are also important occasions for promoting the values and aims of the school.
