Forest in the City!

As I’m sure most of you will know, we are digging up our old running track to create a WONDERFUL Forest in the City learning space. This is a HUGE project, and one which we are sure will have a really positive impact on all of our students and families.

We are, of course, Going Green this year and, where possible, we are taking learning outdoors. Purposeful experiences in the outdoors can be a catalyst for powerful and memorable learning. And we know, through the research, that learning outdoors involves the transformation of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours through direct engagement with the outdoor environment for the personal and social benefit of individuals, families, our community and the planet. So, why wouldn’t we build a forest?!

Work began on 6th October. Before Covid hit, we had grand plans to involve the school community in every step of the site development. Things are obviously more complicated now. However, what I now need EVERYONE to do is send me an email: with your initial thoughts and feelings on our project. I want to capture the voice of our school community. You may also have a desire to get involved. Please let me know if you have relevant skills or a specific interest that you’d like to share with us. I want my inbox to be flooded with emails from you all please!

Every class teacher has worked really hard so far this term, to take the learning outdoors. And every class has adopted a school tree. Ask your children how they feel when they’re outside, ask them what they’ve been doing, what they have learnt and whether or not they’re enjoying our new approach. All feedback is very welcome!

Here are a few pictures of our outdoor learning, so far:
