At Griffin, mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing an ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables us to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in our everyday lives. We embed and explore further the understanding that maths is crucial to everyday learning through real life contexts during Inside Out Fridays where maths is often practical and fun! Through our growing knowledge and understanding, students and adults together learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of maths.
We follow the White Rose mastery approach to learning maths, whereby students are given opportunities for fluency within a concept before then moving on to applying this to reasoning and problem solving challenges.
Our maths lessons are pitched at age related for the class and are differentiated through resources, scaffolds and other supports so that all students can access the learning. The level of challenge increases as students work through the 3 layered tasks, enabling them to work at greater depth where appropriate.
