Home Learning

At Griffin we consider home learning to be important in helping students to make the best of their education by further exploring the learning that has inspired them in class and to create enthusiastic, independent learners.

Reading at home should be an enjoyable activity for all and we try to foster the idea of reading for pleasure through our class and paired reading experiences at Griffin. Bedtime is a fantastic time to share a story with your child or to encourage them to do a bit of independent reading to help them wind down before going to sleep. All students also have an Active Learn login so that they can read a range of texts online on Bug Club and answer questions, which send important assessment information to teachers, to help them plan the next steps in each child's learning. Remember also that it is free to join any local library - this is a great way to get your child reading a range of books for pleasure.

We follow the National Curriculum spelling lists as part of the weekly home learning in all year groups and follow this up with weekly spelling tests and spelling bees across our GGL Federation academies. These spelling lists are included on our website below.

At Griffin ICT is also an integral part of our learning experience and this is mirrored through our home learning provisions. Students are able to challenge themselves against the rest of the world through our Mathletics programme where they complete assignments to gain points and rise up the rankings. Logins for Mathletics can be found in your child's reading journal. Please alert your child's classteacher immediately if you are having any problems with logging in.

Our students’ fluency of times tables is absolutely fundamental to their ability to tackle both arithmetic and reasoning problems. Therefore we give our students the chance to achieve their bronze, silver or gold in the Times Table Olympics! Please practice times tables regularly at home using Times Tables Rockstars (online programme.)

As well as reinforcing and extending our students’ Reading, Maths, spelling and grammar knowledge through home learning, we also like to provide regular creative challenges that allows the students, and the whole family for that matter, to produce something artistic linked to themes running through the whole of Griffin. Look out for these 'Home Learning Challenges' in our fortnightly newsletters.
